Printing

General Guidelines for Printer Usage
  • These printers are provided to print CS course/research related materials only.
  • DO NOT use a printer unless you have been authorized to do so.
  • If your first job fails to print, resending it will not fix the problem.
  • DO NOT print multiple copies of a document. Copy machines are usually much cheaper to operate than laser printers.
    • There is a copy machine located on the first floor in the common area.
  • If you change a single page or range of pages in a document, reprint the modified pages only.
  • DO NOT use CS Department printers for non-CS-course related activities.
    • This is includes, but is not limited to, pornographic material, non-course related web pages, and personal documents/web pages.
  • DO NOT attempt to modify CS printers' settings by manipulating the front-panel menus or PostScript device. Doing so will result in the removal of your account privileges.
  • DO NOT open any CS printer. We have had very costly damage (several hundred dollars) to components in our printers due to users with good intentions.
  • DO NOT attempt to insert non-approved paper in any printer paper trays. Some paper/transparencies, including those intended for ink-jet printers, may damage laser printers, due to the heat produced by the printer.

Paper and Toner
The Computer Science department provides paper and toner for CS printers. If they are out, then please go the Computer Science Office (ENG 4083) and ask for Paper/Toner.

How to print from UNIX
To print a document from the command line:
command: lpr -Pprintername File
Note: This command works from most UNIX programs, just leave off the file, the program will provide that information.

Job status:
lpq -Pprintername

  • This will tell you where your print job is as well as the print job number

    • Removing your print job:
    lprm -Pprintername Jobnumber

  • Jobnumber is the job number you got from lpq command

    • You can cancel your print job on the printer itself, by pressing the cancel button. It may still print several more pages, but it cancels the job.

    How to print from Windows
    You will need to "connect" to the printers. Go the start menu, select run, type: \\lamar\printername, press enter. This will connect you to the printer, after which you can use the printer in windows applications.
    NOTE: The printer path is posted on the front of the printer

    On UWSTUDENT accounts, your profile may not save your printer settings, so you may need to reconnect to the printer/s each time you login.
