Jim Elferdink’s iWork’05, a new entry in the Missing Manual series, is a gentle introduction to Apple’s productivity suite. My faith in this series was shaken a bit by the AppleScript book, but this book renewed it. The writing style is clear, and it steers away (mostly) from unnecessary humor. [...]

Larry Niven is my favorite author, so when I discovered that he had a new book coming out this year, I was delighted. Like other Niven fans, I’ve learned to be disappointed by his recent works. But lately I’ve discovered what I think is the key to his writing: Niven is [...]

College towns everywhere are home to incredibly talented people. Laramie is no exception. This weekend we attended the Centennial Community Theater’s production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. Having never attended one of CCT’s productions before, we were expecting country-bumkin theater. What we got instead was a treat.

There is not [...]

Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology is a provocative, highly entertaining book. As you may expect from Postman (or from the in-your-face subtitle), this is not a paean to technology. Rather, it is a warning that technology comes at a high cost, a subtle, slow process in which humanity turns [...]

Infinity Beach is a classic Jack McDevitt story, with many elements his readers will recognize: mysterious events that happened years ago, false reputations, the search for truth, stark moral choices, general societal decay, and a personal struggle with mediocrity. It is also full of McDevitt’s twists, unusual perspectives on the world, unexpected [...]
