What I Know Now … Navigating Your Computing Career

Speaker: Tracy Camp, Executive Director and CEO, Computing Research Association (CRA)

Abstract: Are you making the most of your professional journey? Join Dr. Tracy Camp, CRA's Executive Director and CEO, for an insightful session on career growth and opportunities. Dr. Camp, a distinguished faculty member at the Colorado School of Mines for over two decades and an ACM and IEEE Fellow, will share the lessons she learned from personal career setbacks, offering a candid look at what she knows now that she wishes she knew then. In this talk, Dr. Camp will discuss:
- The importance of mentoring, networking, and persevering in the face of challenges.
- Actionable tips on negotiation and time management.
- Strategies for dealing with the Imposter Syndrome.

Beyond these personal insights, you'll also learn about CRA's unique opportunities to engage and grow. This session will show you how active participation in CRA's programs, committees, awards, and events can help you expand your network, develop your leadership skills, and influence the future of computing research. The talk will be short to allow for a rich discussion, providing a valuable platform for you to ask questions and learn how to directly benefit your career trajectory.

Bio: Dr. Tracy Camp is a distinguished leader in computing research, now serving as the Executive Director and CEO of the Computing Research Association (CRA). She brings a wealth of experience from her long and successful career at the Colorado School of Mines, where she was a faculty member 1998-2022 and the Department Head of Computer Science 2016-2022.

An expert in wireless networking, Dr. Camp is highly respected for her work on improving the credibility of wireless networking simulation studies. Her research has had a global impact, with her software packages being downloaded over 4,000 times by researchers in 88 countries as of June 2021. Her academic influence is further demonstrated by her research articles, which have been cited over 15,000 times (per Google Scholar).

Throughout her career, Dr. Camp has secured over $25 million in external funding, including more than 20 grants from the National Science Foundation, one of which was a prestigious CAREER award. Her professional accolades include being named both an ACM Fellow and an IEEE Fellow. She has also been recognized internationally as a Fulbright Scholar in New Zealand (2006), a Distinguished Visitor at the University of Bonn, Germany (2010), and a keynote speaker at several international conferences. From 2006 to 2015, she was an ACM Distinguished Speaker.

Dr. Camp holds a B.A. in mathematics from Kalamazoo College, an M.S. in computer science from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in computer science from the College of William and Mary.
